About Geospatial Technology Branch

The National Cartography & Geospatial Center (NCGC) was reorganized in the fall of 2004 as the result of an A-76 Competitive Sourcing Study. The Geospatial Technology Branch is the Performing Activity portion of NCGC and is comprised of six production teams. These teams and a brief summary of their work are provided below.

Cartography & Data Services Team – The Cartography & Data Services Team develops custom thematic maps, processes and delivers geospatial data, and integrates geospatial data into national datasets.

Digital Soil Survey Team – The Digital Soil Survey Team performs technical reviews of soils data posted to the Soil Data Mart, publishes soil surveys in hardcopy and CD formats, and performs soil digital map finishing activities.

DOQ Services Team – The DOQ Services Team obtains and delivers digital orthophoto imagery (DOQQ) for the Soil Survey Program, produces orthophoto imagery mosaics, and generates hardcopy and digital files for map compilation and publication.

Geospatial Technology Services Team – The Geospatial Technology Services Team provides GIS and GPS training, reviews and recommends new technology, and develops GIS/GPS applications/procedures/tools for users in the field.

Professional & Technical Support Team – The Professional & Technical Support Team designs, edits, and formats technical publications; administers photomechanical contract work, and carries out a variety of production related automation activities to make the branch more efficient.

Resources Inventory Team – The Resources Inventory Team (RIT) supports the National Resources Inventory (NRI) business area through the development of geospatial products for data collection, by providing a helpdesk service to NRI customers, remote sensing expertise, and NRI data analyses for internal and external customers. The team directly supports the operations of the three National Remote Sensing laboratories (Portland, OR, Fort Worth, TX, and Greensboro, NC).
